Choosing an electricity supplier in NYC
Who has the best electricity rates in New York, NY?
There is no permanent winner — ESCO rates change monthly and the cheapest supplier this month is often not the cheapest next month. What matters is whether a plan beats ConEd's default supply rate (the Market Supply Charge) over its whole term. This site ranks every current ConEd-area plan against that baseline and updates daily, so the top of the table is the answer for today rather than a fixed recommendation.
What is the best electricity supplier for apartments and renters in NYC?
Renters can switch supplier exactly like owners, as long as the ConEd account is in your name — you do not need the landlord's permission and nothing physical changes in the apartment. Because apartments generally use less electricity than houses, a plan's early termination fee and any monthly service charge matter proportionally more than a small difference in the per-kWh rate. Sort by effective rate, then check the ETF column.
How do I compare ESCO rates against ConEd?
Compare supply against supply. ConEd's Market Supply Charge is what you pay ConEd per kWh for the electricity itself, and an ESCO's rate replaces exactly that number — delivery charges, taxes and the customer charge are unchanged either way. That makes (MSC − ESCO rate) ÷ MSC a fair percentage. Every plan on this site carries that comparison already.
How do I change my electricity supplier in NYC?
Pick a plan, then enroll on that supplier's own website — you will need your ConEd account number, which is on your bill. ConEd continues to deliver the power, read the meter and send the bill; only the supply line changes. The switch usually takes one or two billing cycles. This site does not handle enrollment and never sees your account details.
Is switching to an ESCO always cheaper than ConEd?
No, and often it is not. Under New York's post-2021 price cap most conventional ESCOs have stopped offering ConEd residential plans at all, and several plans currently on file cost more than ConEd's default supply. Watch for two-phase offers in particular: a low introductory rate for the first month or two can blend out to well above ConEd's rate over the full term. Rates on this site are always the effective rate over the whole term.
